As developers, we love shiny new things — new frameworks, databases, architecture patterns. But when it comes to building your own SaaS, one rule applies: simplicity wins. Are you a .NET developer? Perfect — use .NET (for example, ASP.NET Core, Blazor, Azure) if that’s your proven toolkit. Don’t fall into the trap of learning an exotic new language or building an ultra-scalable infrastructure from scratch. Stick to technologies you already know best — this will help you move forward faster. You can explore new technical toys later, once your product starts generating revenue (or when scalability actually becomes an issue).
Choose a so-called boring but reliable stack — proven technologies with solid documentation and an active community. Your goal isn’t to impress other developers but to deliver a working product. Use existing services and libraries to speed up your development. Don’t build everything from scratch: why write your own authentication system when there are ready-made solutions like Identity? Why implement payments manually — use Stripe or PayPal APIs instead. These tools are battle-tested and will save you weeks of work, allowing you to focus on what makes your SaaS unique.
The same goes for architecture — keep it simple at the beginning. A monolith hosted on Azure App Service might be completely sufficient. Don’t overcomplicate things with microservices, Kubernetes, and other heavyweight setups until you truly have many users. Remember, your time is your most valuable resource as a solo founder. Every hour spent debugging a complex tech stack is an hour not spent on business growth or marketing.
So: focus on what works and what you know. You’ll scale and optimize later — when there’s a real need for it. Early on, the key is to deliver value to your users as quickly as possible.
